UC Irvine drops Pepperdine 13-10
Marko Madaras' hat trick not enough as Waves fall in season finale.
Nov. 24, 2013
IRVINE, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team dropped their final match of the season Sunday to UC Irvine, 13-10. The Waves led 6-4 at intermission but were outscored by the Anteaters 9-4 over the final two quarters. Junior Marko Madaras netted a hat trick to lead Pepperdine offensively.
Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) gave the Waves (9-13, 1-7 MPSF) an early 1-0 edge when he found the back of the net at the 4:26 mark in the first quarter. The teams would then swap goals for the majority of the first half until Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) scored the first of his two goals to stretch the Waves lead to two just before half.
Playing in his hometown, Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) opened the second half scoring and stretched the Pepperdine lead to 7-4. However, UC Irvine (13-12, 1-7 MPSF) would take control by scoring five goals in the quarter and head to the fourth with a 9-8 advantage.
Madaras would score two consecutive goals to open the fourth to give the Waves a 10-9 edge. The Anteaters scored the final four goals of the game and ended the Waves season in heartbreaking fashion. Had Pepperdine lost by two goals they would have advanced to the MPSF tournament due to owning a goal differential advantage over UC Irvine.
Nicholas Candau (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) tallied two goals for the Waves, as did senior Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) who played in his last match as a Wave. Leading the way for the Anteaters was senior driver Bojan Hrlec who found the back of the net an incredible six times, while Larson Pfeil and Mitch Wise each had two goals each.
Senior All-American goalie Bence Valics (Eger Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) had seven saves for Pepperdine, while Alex Kazmier also had seven for the Anteaters.
