Pepperdine Falls to UC Santa Barbara 9-6 in MPSF Tournament
Waves Finish Eighth IN MPSF Water Polo Championship
Nov. 25, 2012
LOS ANGELES - Pepperdine struggled offensively and dropped a 9-6 loss to UC Santa Barbara Sunday in the seventh place match of the 2012 MPSF Tournament Sunday morning at the McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Waves (11-13) conclude the season with an eight place finish in the demanding MPSF.
Both the Waves and the Gauchos (16-12) got off to slow starts offensively, as UCSB took a 3-2 lead into halftime. The Gauchos came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in the third and fourth quarter. Pepperdine managed single goals in the first through third period before rallying for three in the fourth, but UCSB also netted three in the frame to preserve the 9-6 win.
Missing several key players for the second straight game after suspensions in the opening round match against Cal, fatigue certainly played a factor for short-handed Pepperdine.
"We had another difficult game against UC Santa Barbara today," Pepperdine head coach Willo Rodriguez said. "Missing three key players made it difficult to compete, especially towards the end of the game when our guys got tired."
Pepperdine's seniors accounted for all six goals in their final collegiate match. Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) recorded a hat trick to lead the Waves offensively. James Perry (Orinda, Calif/Miramonte HS) added a pair of goals, while Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) also found the back of the net.
Loomis concludes a strong final season with a team-high 48 goals, while DeTrane turned in 37. Perry tallied 15 in his final year in Malibu.
Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) collected 10 saves for Pepperdine and limited the Tigers to just a single goal in the first period.
