Waves Down Pacific 12-9 at MPSFs
Senior JP MacDonell and freshman Danny White each scored three goals to propel the Pepperdine men's water polo team to a 12-9 victory over Pacific.
"The team played with a lot of heart this morning," said Head Coach Jack Kocur. "They were coming off a tough loss to UCLA yesterday afternoon and they came out and played today like they were still playing for the championship. I'm really proud of all of them especially the seniors."
While MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) and White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) were the high-scorers, six other Waves contributed goals to the victory.
A close first period started with an early goal by senior Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) followed by a goal by Pacific. Junior Andrew Milcovich (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) scored the second goal for Pepperdine and the score was 2-1. The Tigers answered back with back-to-back goals at 3:18 to take the lead at 3-2. MacDonell scored the final goal of the period to tie the game at 3-3.
Second period opened with another MacDonell goal at 5:40 to put the Waves back on top at 4-3. Pacific responded with a goal of its own to tie the game once again at 4-4. White came back with 2:12 on the clock to start a 3-0 Pepperdine run with MacDonell and senior Christian Cardey (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS) both adding goals. The Waves were up 7-4 at the half.
The scoring run continued into the third period with a goal by senior Jacob Young (Saratoga, Calif./Valley Christian HS) with 7:35 on the clock. Teammates Sam Busby (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla HS) and White contributed two more goals to shut Pacific out in the third period. The score was 10-4.
The Tigers came back in the final period after goals by White and senior Preston Lujan ending at 5:24 with the Waves leading by eight at 12-4. Pacific went on a three goal scoring run, but it wasn't enough to catch Pepperdine. When the final buzzer sounded, the Waves were up 12-9.
On Sunday, November 29, the Waves will play No. 7 UC Irvine for fifth place at 11:30 a.m. at the McDonald's Swim Center.
