MacDonell's Goal Helps USA to a Tie against Serbia


PALO ALTO, Calif. – Pepperdine water polo standout JP MacDonell’s goal helped the USA Men’s Senior National Team to a 13-13 tie in the final game of a three game set against Serbia on Sunday.


The USA Senior National Team and Serbia battled for the third and final time in a jam packed Avery Aquatics Center on the campus of Stanford University early Sunday and for the second day in a row the game ended in a draw. The tie leaves Team USA with one loss and two ties against Serbia.


MacDonell’s goal came in the third period on five meter penalty drawn by teammate Brian Alexander.. The goal gave the USA team a 6-5 lead. The USA team finished the period up by one at halftime, 7-6.


The USA team went on to finish the third period in a 9-9 tie. The fourth period saw both teams battling for the lead. With a little over a minute left, Serbia held the lead with a 13-12 advantage. Jeff Power shot the final goal of the match with 59 seconds on the clock to give the USA team its second tie of the series.


MacDonell is training as a member of the USA Senior National Team and has recently been selected to represent the United States at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia on July 1-12. will feature a JP MacDonell blog with his thoughts and experiences as a member of the USA team.
