July 30, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine men's water polo team releases the schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. The Waves will bring an experienced team to the pool as they boast 13 returning seniors. The seasoned veterans will lead the Waves through a tough schedule that includes appearances in the UCLA Invitational, NorCal and SoCal Tournaments and participation in the ever-competitive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
Interim head coach Gary O'Brien said, "We are very excited about this year's water polo schedule. We have many returning players that have played this similar schedule as last year and will be very well prepared for a successful season. As a team we are looking forward to a strong start to this year's game schedule based on our summer and anticipated preseason training."
After opening their season Sept. 1 on the road at the UCLA Invitational, the Waves home opener at Raleigh D. Runnels Memorial Pool is set for Sept. 8 against crosstown rival Loyola Marymount.
The Waves will travel to Stanford for the NorCal Tournament Sept. 15-16 and the following weekend will host the first of two double headers of the season. On Sept. 22 the Waves welcome Long Beach City College to Malibu in an 11 a.m. start, and will follow up with a contest against Pomona Pitzer at 2 p.m. On Oct. 6 the Waves will host a second double header, this time with Concordia (Calif.) and Goldenwest College.
The MPSF season opener is set for Oct. 13 at 11 a.m., as the Waves host UC Irvine. That weekend will mark a quick turnaround for the Waves, as they will face Stanford on Oct. 14 in another MPSF tilt.
The Waves will then embark on their longest road trip of the season, with the next five contests coming on the road. After a nonconference tilt at UC Davis on Oct. 19, the Waves have three MPSF battles on the road in Pacific, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. On Nov. 11 the Waves return to the friendly confines of Raleigh D. Runnels Memorial Pool, but will be faced with perennial contender California.
After a trip to Long Beach State on Nov. 8, the Waves will close out the season and celebrate the careers of 13 seniors on Nov. 11 against USC at home.
The MPSF Tournament will be hosted by USC this year and will take place Nov. 22-24 in Los Angeles, Calif.
