MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team is back on campus, ready for the new school year and water polo season. This year the Waves will be coached by interim head coach Gary O'Brien, with assistance from new assistant coach William "Willo" Rodriguez. The 2013 head coach will be Terry Schroeder. Fresh off the 2012 Olympics, Schroeder will act as a volunteer assistant for the Waves in 2012.

In a vote by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) coaches, the Waves garnered 23 points, good for seventh overall in the preseason coaches' poll. The Waves are looking to improve upon a 2011 season where they finished 12-14 overall and 2-6 in the ever-competitive MPSF. They finished tied for sixth in the conference after a trip to the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals.

The Waves return an experienced bunch of 18 players, including ACWPC All-America honorable mention center Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and attack Matt DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS/Diablo Valley College). Joining the returners will be 16 freshman to add to the fold, headlined by junior college All-American Marko Madaras.

The Waves will open up the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 in the UCLA Invitational in Westwood, Calif.
