MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 6 Waves return to Malibu and Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool for only the second and third true home games of the season as they host No. 9 Long Beach State on Saturday and No. 5 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. The Waves will look to capitalize on the advantage of playing in Malibu and earn two key wins in Mountain Pacific Federation (MPSF) action.

LAST WEEK -- The Waves fell 11-8 at then-No. 4 California. Sophomore goalkeeper Bence Valics made 13 saves in the loss. Matthew DeTrane and James Perry led the squad with two goals apiece. In non-conference action at the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament, the Waves defeated Harvard 20-2 and then-No. 17 Bucknell 16-7. Junior Matthew Carter earned two starts in the tournament and made 17 saves over both games, including 10 against Bucknell. Andrew Milcovich scored a season-high four goals in the win over Bucknell.

IN THE RANKINGS -- The Waves started the season ranked No. 10 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's national rankings and have steadily climbed the charts, making it to No. 5 at their highest, where the team sat for two straight weeks. After going 2-1 last weekend the Waves remain at No. 6 for the second-straight week.

IN THE STATS -- Through 19 games this season, 16 different players have found the back of the net for the Waves with seven scoring in double-figures. Redshirt senior Andrew Milcovich leads the way with 34 goals, followed by junior Matthew DeTrane with 33. Senior Nathan Castillo is next with 27 goals and junior Stephen Loomis has 24. Milcovich leads the team with 21 assists DeTrane also leads the way with 16 steals.

BETWEEN THE PIPES -- A 2010 All-MPSF honorable mention selection, sophomore goalkeeper Bence Valics has made 164 saves in 15.75 games played this season. Matthew Carter earned two starts over the weekend at the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament, making 10 saves against Bucknell and seven saves against Harvard.

LONG BEACH STATE -- The Waves and the 49ers have met once already the season, in the first game of the SoCal Tournament in Long Beach, where the Waves took the game, 11-9. The 49ers are 13-6 overall and 0-3 in MPSF play. The squad comes to Malibu after a 10-6 loss to UC Santa Barbara. Senior Alex Petrovic leads the 49ers with 40 goals in 19 games played. His 2.11 goals per game average ranks sixth in the MPSF. Last year the 49ers and Waves were 1-1, with the Waves winning the MPSF matchup in Long Beach, 9-8. In 2009 the squads played at Raleigh Runnels Pool, with the Waves winning 8-7. Overall the Waves lead the all-time matchups with 67 wins to 29.

UC SANTA BARBARA -- The Waves and Gauchos met in the NorCal Tournament early in the season, with the Waves winning the matchup in a close 7-6 game. The Gauchos bring a 1-2 record in MPSF play and a 13-7 record overall to Malibu. Last weekend the squad defeated the Waves' other weekend opponent, Long Beach State, 11-9. Sophomore Matt Gronow leads the Gauchos 1.70 goals per game and 34 goals overall, ranking 15th in the MPSF. Goalkeeper Myles Christian ranks fifth in the conference with a 7.22 goals against average. Christian anchors the Gauchos' defense, which ranks fifth in team defense. Overall the Waves lead in all-time head-to-head matchups 57-33. Last year the Waves lost in Santa Barbara 12-11 in an MPSF matchup.
