Waves Fall at Irvine, 8-7

MALIBU, Calif. – Adam Hewko’s four goals weren’t enough to keep the No. 6 Pepperdine men’s water polo team from a loss to No. 5 UC Irvine Friday night, 7-6.

In a closely contested game that saw the Waves (22-8, 1-5) tied at the end of the third quarter 5-5, and rallying early in the fourth quarter to take the lead for the first time in the match with an 8-7 score, the Anteaters Colin Mello proved to be too much for Pepperdine’s defense. With 3:39 left in the fourth quarter, Mellow scored a goal to tie the game. Irvine (11-8, 4-2) came back with 1:16 left in the game to set up a power-play after a Wave exclusion and Mellow scored the game winning goal (8-7).

Pepperdine goalkeeper sophomore Travis Stachowski (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Foothill HS) recorded 14 saves to Irvine’s Matt Garcia’s six. Sophomore J.P. MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif. / Bellarmine HS) scored two goals and senior Grant Miller (La Verne, Calif. / Damien HS) had one goal.

Saturday, Nov. 10, the Waves host Concordia at 11 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match with No. 14 UC San Diego.
