Waves Complete Season Sweep of Santa Clara with 67-57 Victory in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif.- Wearing throwback jerseys to honor Pepperdine's 75th anniversary, the Waves women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Santa Clara, 67-57 at Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Despite being down 26-24 at the half, the Waves battled back with a strong second half, shooting 52 percent from field to take the lead with 18:13 left in the second half and never trailed again.
The Waves (9-8, 4-2 WCC) were led by senior guard Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) who finished with 16 points. Fellow senior guard Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) was next with 14 points, and junior forward Kelsey Patrick(Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) tied her season high with 13 points (10 in the second half) and led the team with seven rebounds.
Freshman guard Nici Gilday paced the Broncos (8-9, 1-3 WCC) with 15 points and five rebounds.
For the first 14 minutes of the game the Waves held a steady lead of about four minutes. Free throws by the Broncos tied and gave them their first lead of the day, 17-16 with 6:06 left in the first half.
The Broncos would increase their lead to a high of four, 26-22 with 1:07 left in the first half off a three-pointer by Gilday.
The Waves would shore up their defense off a 30 second timeout with 44 seconds left in the half. On three consecutive defensive plays, the Waves would come out with blocks as Jade McNorton(Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS), Jackson and Patrick would come up with the swats.
On the offensive end, with 15 seconds left in the half, the Waves got the final shot and Jackson completed the layup to pull within two at halftime, 26-24.
Jackson led the Waves at the half with eight points and three rebounds. The Waves forced 10 turnovers and tallied six steals in the half.
The Waves wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, as Patrick sank a jumper to tie the game up 26-26 with 19:41 to go. The Broncos would answer, and the two teams would go back-and-forth until the 18:13 mark when Patrick completed another jumper to put the Waves ahead 30-29.
The squad would never relinquish the lead through the rest of the game. Senior forward Skye Barnett(Albuqerque, N.M./Cibola HS) got in on the action as she carried the Waves on a 6-0 run through the 15:13 mark to push their lead to six, 38-32.
The Waves would build the lead to double-figures, 59-49 with 4:43 to go on a Patrick layup.
Bell would solidify the win as she hit six free throws in the final minute to give the Waves the 67-57 victory.
The Waves outshot the Broncos 52 percent to 46.2 percent from the field in the second half. Strong defense on the perimeter held them to only 1-7 shooting from behind the three-point line.
The Waves will stay at home and host San Francisco at 7 p.m. PT on Thursday, Jan. 19.
