Jan. 19, 2013
MORAGA, Calif. – Kelsey Patrick continued her strong play turning in her first career double-double performance, but Pepperdine could not overcome a streaking Saint Mary’s team and dropped a 72-61 decision Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion in West Coast Conference play. The Waves (4-12, 1-4 WCC) just could not stop the Gaels (12-5, 4-1 WCC) from collecting their fourth straight win in the series.
Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) matched a career-high with 18 points and added a career-best 11 rebounds. The senior, who drilled a career-high five 3-pointers against Saint Mary’s, is averaging a team-high 12.6 points on a sizzling .647 (11-17) from 3-point range to go along with 7.8 rebounds per game during league play this season.
Freshman Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) enjoyed a strong effort off the bench scoring a career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 from the field in 20 minutes. Wallace becomes the first Waves freshman to crack double-digit scoring this season and helped Pepperdine outscore SMC reserves 32-15.
Pepperdine never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 20 in the second half before surging late. The Waves had chances to cut the lead to single-digits inside of four minutes, but Saint Mary’s responded to every threat down the stretch.
For the game Pepperdine shot .357 (20-56) from the floor and .471 (8-17) from long distance. It marks the third time in five league games that the Waves have shot better from 3-point range than inside the arc. SMC finished at .352 (25-71) and connected on .400 (6-15) from deep. The Gaels held a huge 52-37 rebound advantage and outscored Pepperdine in the paint 28-18.
Kate Gaze led four Gaels in double-digit scoring with 15 points, while Jackie Nared collected a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double.
Pepperdine returns to action when it hots defending WCC champion Gonzaga Thursday, January 24. Tip-off against the Zags is set for 7:00 p.m. from Firestone Fieldhouse in a game featuring live video via WaveCasts.
