SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Pepperdine battled, but could not slow down a surging San Diego offense and dropped a 71-50 West Coast Conference decision Monday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Waves (4-18, 1-10 WCC) could not keep up with the hot-shooting Toreros (16-8, 8-4 WCC), who completed the regular season sweep for the second straight year.

Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) led the way for the Waves offensively with 13 points on 5-for-10 from the field with six rebounds. Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) chipped in seven points.

San Diego dominated the first half and conducted a clinic in transition offense, scoring 32 of their 46 first-half points in the paint, the majority in transition. The Toreros hit at a sizzling .645 (20-31) from the floor and only attempted five 3-pointers. Pepperdine shot .379 (11-29) from the field in the first 20 minutes.

Pepperdine used a 6-0 run to close the gap in the first half to seven, 31-24 on a baseline jumper from Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS), but USD promptly went on a 15-4 run to take a 46-28 lead into the intermission. Cooney-Williams led the way for the Waves with seven points, while Brockway added five.

Things did not improve in the second half. Pepperdine closed the gap to 15, 47-32 on a jumper by Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) with 18:10 remaining, but the Waves went ice cold from the field and did not score again until a bucket by Shoushtari with 10:24 left to snap a 10-0 Torero run. USD led by as many as 30 before Pepperdine made a late push in the final three minutes of the contest.

USD shot at a .500 (29-58) clip for the game and limited Pepperdine to .345 (20-58) shooting. The Toreros held a 46-31 rebound advantage and outscored the Waves 46-20 in the paint.

Katelyn McDaniel led three Toreros in double-digit scoring with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Maya Hood added 15 points and 10 boards. San Diego had 23 assists on 29 field goals.

Pepperdine returns to action when it hosts Brigham Young Saturday, February 16 in its third game in seven days. Tip-off against the Cougars is set for 2:00 p.m. in a game featuring live streaming video via WaveCasts.
