Waves Hang Tight in First Half, But Fall 66-40 at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - After hanging tight in the first half with the Gonzaga Bulldogs on the road at the McCarthey Athletic Center, the Pepperdine women's basketball team fell victim to a big second half by the Bulldogs, finishing with a 66-40 loss.
The Waves (12-13, 7-7 WCC) and the Bulldogs (24-4, 12-2 WCC) suited up in front of a sold out crowd of 6,000. In the first half the Waves played toe -to-toe with the Zags and were down just two points, 22-20 at the half. However, in the second half the Bulldogs came alive capitalized on a tough shooting night for the Waves and stringed together a 22-0 run to lead them to the victory.
Senior guard Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) led the Waves with 11 points, while senior forward Skye Barnett (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS)also scored in double-figures with 10.
In the first half the Waves jumped out to a 5-0 lead and would hold a five-point margin through much of the half. With 9:35 left and a 15-10 lead, the Zags would go on a 7-0 lead to take a 17-15 lead through the 4:22 mark. Junior forward T'Keyah Shealy (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit HS) would break in with two free throws to tie things back up, 17-17 with 4:21 left.
The Bulldogs would open up a five-point run with 2:37 to go in the half, but Kelsey Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) would sink a three-pointer with 54 seconds left to put the Waves within two, 22-20 at the half.
In the first half the team defense was solid, forcing the Bulldogs into eight turnovers, collecting five steals and holding them to 9-of-30 shooting. Jackson led the Waves with eight points in the half.
The Waves started the second half hanging with the Zags. With the score tied at 34-34 with 13:26 left in the game, the Bulldogs started a 22-0 run through the 3:53 mark to push their lead to 56-34.
Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral HS) would break the streak with a three pointer at the 3:34 mark, but that would not be enough, as the Zags extended their lead through the final buzzer, 66-40.
The Waves return home to host rival Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. and then finish the regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. as they host Saint Mary's.
