Women's Basketball: Pepperdine Falls at USC 65-56

LOS ANGELES – Pepperdine led early, but could not hold off USC, dropping a 65-56 decision in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center. The Waves (1-2) kept pace for most of the game, but the Women of Troy (1-1) pulled away late as they continued to rebound and score in the paint.
Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in her first career double-double night. Cooney-Williams scored 10 points in the second half and added an assist and a steal in 33 minutes. Robie Mayberry (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O’Dowd HS) chipped in 12 points and five boards before fouling out in 31 minutes.
“We’ve got to continue to work on rebounding and get better on our execution,” Pepperdine head coach Julie Rousseau said. “I am pleased with how we responded and how hard we played, but we have to do a better job rebounding.”
Pepperdine made the same number of field goals (22) and 3-pointers (2) as USC, but the Womenof Troy held a 47-31 rebound advantage, 17-13 on the offensive glass. USC also made as many free throws as the Waves attempted (19). Cassie Harberts surged late for USC, finishing with 24 points, 16 in the second half, to go along with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
A Mayberry lay-up gave the Waves a 37-36 lead with12:02 remaining in regulation. A three-point play by Harberts gave the Women of Troy a 39-37 lead it would not surrender and Pepperdine could not cut the deficit to a two possession game in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds to go along with a game-high four steals. Jade McNorton (Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS) chipped in seven points in her first start of the season.
Pepperdine opened the game with an 8-4 burst, capped by a jumper from Cooney-Williams at the 15:07 mark. After five lead changes and four tie scores, USC used a 12-8 push to take a 27-24 lead into the intermission. The Waves forced 15 turnovers and scored 10 points off Women of Troy miscues in the opening 20 minutes. Mayberry led Pepperdine with six points, while Cooney-Williams pulled down six rebounds, three offensive in the frame.
Pepperdine shot at a .333 (9-27) rate in the first, while USC hit at a .417 (10-24) rate. The Women of Troy held a 27-13 rebound edge.
The Waves return to action when they host the 2012 Pepperdine Thanksgiving Classic November 23-24 at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves welcome Seton Hall, South Dakota and Wyoming to Malibu. Pepperdine opens with South Dakota at 3:30 p.m. Friday, following the Seton Hall vs. Wyoming contest at 1:00 p.m. The Waves will play in the 3:30 p.m. contest on Saturday’s consolation/championship round.
NOTES: Tessa Emerson’s mom, Holly (Ford), was an All-American at USC during the Cheryl Miller era … Pepperdine swiped a season-low 10 steals, but have reached double-digit thefts in each of its first three games … The Waves will host crosstown opponent UCLA December 28 in the second and final game against the Pac-12 this season … Pepperdine falls still seeks its first win in the all-time series vs. USC (0-19).
