LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Pepperdine women’s basketball team ran into a hot shooting Wyoming squad Saturday night, falling 84-64 on the road. The Cowgirls hit 10 threes, shooting 52.6 percent from beyond the arc to outpace the Waves.
The loss drops Pepperdine to 2-3 on the year and keeps the Cowgirls perfect at 4-0.
The teams played nearly even through the first 10 minutes of play, with Wyoming holding a 16-12 lead at the 10 minute mark. A 14-0 run for the Cowgirls, however, broke the game open in favor of the home team as Wyoming would hold a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Pepperdine cut the Cowgirl lead to 10 on a Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) steal and coast to coast layup. An 8-2 Wyoming run put the Waves back down by 16, 45-29 late in the period. Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) answered with a jumper just before the break giving the Cowgirls a 14-point lead at the half.
Green led the Waves with 13 points in the first half, but scored just two in the second period as Pepperdine fell behind by 20 in the first five minutes. The Waves cut the Wyoming lead to 14 early in the period, but got no closer the rest of the way.
Richardson finished with a team-high 18 points for Pepperdine. The junior guard also led all players in the game with a career-high seven assists. Green was the only other Wave in double figures with 15 points and Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) added nine.
Both Kayla Woodward and Kaitlyn Mileto scored 24 points for Wyoming. Woodward was 4-of-6 from long range and Mileto went 3-for-5 from deep.
Pepperdine shot 45 percent from the floor, but hit half as many threes in the game. Wyoming shot 46.5 percent from the floor and also hit five more free throws.
The Waves stay on the road, heading to Oregon to face the ducks on Monday. Pepperdine then heads back to Southern California for a matchup at Long Beach State (Nov. 30).
