LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman guard Allie Green scored a game-high 27 points in her first collegiate start, but the Pepperdine women’s basketball team was unable to power past Long Beach State and fell 74-61. The contest was the Waves’ fourth road game in 10 days.

Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS), getting the starting call in the absence of Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS), poured in a career-high 27 points on a 10-for-19 shooting effort, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

“Allie played big for us today,” said head coach Ryan Weisenberg in a post-game interview. “She took the (starting) opportunity and ran with it.”

Prior to being on the floor for 35 minutes today, Green was averaging 25.2 minutes and 8.2 points per game off the bench.

Overall, Long Beach State (3-2) held a slight advantage in shooting, knocking down 39.1 percent of its shots compared to the Waves’ 35.9 percent success rate. Four 49ers ended the game in double figures, led by Lauren Spargo with 19 points.

Junior guard Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) joined Green in double figure scoring, draining four three-point field goals – three in the first three minutes of the second half – and going 2-for-4 from the charity stripe for 14 points.

Underneath the basket, sophomore forward Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds while adding eight points.

Although Amanda Lovely (Palo Alto, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) put the first basket of the game in the books, the 49ers went on a ferocious 15-0 scoring run to control the tempo in the opening half.

LBSU led by as much as 19 after Spargo sunk a jump shot with 7:31 left in the half, but Green was able to get the Waves back within 12, 35-23, with her 12th point of the half with a minute left on the clock.  A final Long Beach State field goal would give the home team a 37-23 lead heading into the locker room for halftime.

Pepperdine’s (2-5) performance tremendously improved in the second half, as they Waves cut the deficit to 10 after Shoushtari drained her third three pointer of the stanza with just 2:18 of time run off the clock.

Although the 49ers maintained their double-digit lead for much of the final frame, Pepperdine made good from the free throw line and got back within nine after Green forced a turnover and sunk the three-point shot.

Shoushtari put the Waves within seven, 61-54, after making a free throw with 3:57 left on the clock.

With under five minutes to play, however, the comeback effort would run out of time as the Waves were forced to resort to committing fouls to stop the clock.

Despite the loss, Pepperdine did out-score Long Beach State in the second half 38-37.

The Waves make their long awaited return to Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday, December 3 when they host UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. WaveCasts will broadcast the contest live and for free with Josh Perigo calling the action.
