MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine put up a spirited fight and trailed by four at halftime, but No. 7 Kentucky recovered and powered to a 80-62 non-conference triumph Tuesday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves (3-6) showed some encouraging signs against an elite opponent in the second ever meeting against the Wildcats (9-1).

Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) led the way for the Waves offensively with a team-high 14 points to go along with a game-high four assists. Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for Pepperdine as the Waves won the rebounding battle against the much taller Wildcat team 44-43. Shoushtari added seven points, two steals and an assist.

Kelsey Patrick (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak HS) turned in her strongest game of the year with 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds off the bench. The senior shot 5-of-10 from the field and added a pair of assists. Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) turned in a 10-point night off the bench as Pepperdine reserves held an impressive 35-17 scoring advantage against UK.

DeNesha Stallworth led all scorers with 17 points on 8-for-13 from the floor, while Bria Goss added 16 points. Kentucky dominated in the paint, outscoring the Waves 42-24 and shot at a .448 (31-70) clip for the game and limited Pepperdine to a .355 (22-62) night.

After trailing 11-0 to open the game, Pepperdine closed the opening half on a 10-3 run to close to within four, 37-33 at the intermission. The Waves would get no closer as UK 10-2 run out of the break and led by as many as 22 in the second period.
