MALIBU, Calif. - Brackets, game times and television coverage were all announced today by the West Coast Conference for the upcoming WCC Basketball Championships, which begin Thursday at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The 10th-seeded Pepperdine women's basketball team will face seventh-seeded Santa Clara on Thursday (March 6) in the first game of the tournament. The first-round matchup tips off at noon and it will air on BYUtv and TheW.tv.
The fifth-seeded Pepperdine men's basketball team earned a bye to the quarterfinals, and the Waves will battle fourth-seeded Saint Mary's on Saturday (March 8) sometime after 8 p.m. (30 minutes after the end of the 6 p.m. game). The game will be shown on ESPN2.
The long-time voice of the Waves, Al Epstein, will host audio-only broadcasts at PepperdineSports.com for all of Pepperdine's men's and women's games at the tournament.
Should the women advance, the quarterfinals are on Friday (March 7). For both the men and women, the semifinals are Monday (March 10) and the championship is on Tuesday (March 11).
Led by third-year coach Marty Wilson, the men's squad (15-15, 8-10) earned its first top-half finish in the WCC since 2004, and the Waves' #5 seed is their best since 2005. The team's 15 overall wins are also the most since 2005. Though the Waves lost twice to the Gaels this season, it was only by a combined total of eight points.
Ryan Weisenberg's first season as head coach hasn't been easy as he embarked upon a rebuilding project, but his Waves (5-24, 1-17) will take on an opponent in the first round that they've already beaten this year. Back on January 2 in Malibu, Pepperdine defeated Santa Clara 100-93 in double-overtime. The two teams met again in the regular-season finale on Saturday, and the Broncos pulled out just a six-point win (67-61) at home.
