Waves Honored at Women's Basketball Banquet

MALIBU, Calif. -- Pepperdine women’s basketball standout Daphanie Kennedy, was honored Thursday night (March 28) along with several of her teammates at the 2008 women’s basketball banquet, held at the Graziadio Center at Pepperdine University.


Coach Julie Rousseau expressed her appreciation and gratitude for the dedication and hard work the team showed throughout the season, even under adverse conditions.


Kennedy (Oakland, Calif./  Kearny HS) was honored as the Most Valuable Player for the Waves. The talented senior guard led the WCC in scoring this year with 308 conference points (549 overall) and was named to the first team All-WCC Conference 2007-08 . She broke Pepperdine’s career steal record with 197 steals. Kennedy notched a place on several Pepperdine record lists as well as WCC leaders for 2007-08.


In addition to Kennedy’s MVP award, she was recognized by Pepperdine supporters Judy and Jim Zierick,  for her attitude, work ethic, determination and sportsmanship, as well as being the first generation in her family to attend and graduate from college. The Ziericks have established a scholarship in her name that will be awarded yearly for an athlete on the team with similar attributes and needs.


Miranda Ayim (London, Ontario, Canada) received the Most Improved Award. Ayim was a first team WCC All-Conference for 2007-08. Ayim was second on the team in scoring, with 368 points for the year. Ayim led the team in blocks with 13.1 per game (55 for the season).  She also placed in the top five on several WCC leader lists.


Jessica Ross (Gilroy, Calif./ Notre Dame HS) and Alisha Bryant (Pacoima, Calif./ Chatsworth HS) received the Most Inspirational Award for their positive contributions to the team.


Seniors Kennedy, Teiosha George (Palmdale, Calif./ Palmdale HS) and Shannon Johnson (Highland Village Teas/ Marcus HS) were recognized for the contributions they made to the team in the years that they played. Each athlete was given their jersey framed.


Coach Tina Samaniego produced an outstanding video and photo tribute to the 2007-08 team, showing preseason, practices and game highlights, as well as documentation from several road trips featuring the Waves.


Ross provided some light moments to the night with her humorous stories about the seniors over the years. The seniors offered words of wisdom to their teammates and the evening ended with hugs, tears and laughter.
