MALIBU, Calif. - A near-capacity crowd at Firestone Fieldhouse helped kick off the start of the 2012-13 college basketball season on Friday night at the annual Blue & Orange Madness hosted by Pepperdine University.

By the end of the night, a sizeable amount of those fans in attendance were on the court, as the teams surprised the crowd with special dance/lip sync routines before finishing up with the Cupid Shuffle. Fans were invited to join them and hundreds and hundreds of Waves students did so.

The dunk contest introduced the high-flying skills of freshman Jett Raines to Pepperdine fans. He made a variety of dunks, highlighted by one that began with teammate Malte Kramer juggling three balls under the basket. With Raines running at full speed toward the basket, Kramer flipped one up and Raines threw down a tremendous slam. Audience participation determined this year's winner, and Raines was the easy choice over fellow competitors Jordan Baker, Brendan Lane and Atif Russell.

In the first round of the three-point shooting contest, Lorne Jackson of the men's team edged Shay Cooney-Williams of the women's squad, 10 makes to nine. But when the two were matched up again in the finals, Cooney-Williams upped her game, found her rhythm and outscored Jackson, 12 to 10, for the title.

The hotshot contest was won by the trio of Robie Mayberry from the women's team (she made the three-pointer), Caleb Willis from the men's team (he made the free throw) and student Tyler Ditmore (he made the lay-up). Ditmore earned a trip to the WCC Championships in Las Vegas with his team's victory. Mayberry was part of the winning hotshot team for the second year in a row.

Pepperdine's head coaches each had a chance to address the raucous crowd near the beginning of the show. Women's coach Julie Rousseau pumped up those up in attendance and asked them to come back, telling them, "when you show up like this, you are the best fans in the country!" Men's coach Marty Wilson talked about the growth of his team, saying, "we're excited to get this program back to where it's supposed to be, not where it used to be, but where it's supposed to be!"

In addition to the teams' event-ending routing, several outstanding performances were put on by the likes of the all-new Pom Squad, the Pepp Band, Won by One (a Pepperdine a capella group that sang the national anthem), the Pepperdine Step Team and Fanny Pak (a group that competed on America's Best Dance Crew).

Pepperdine's teams have their home exhibitions on Tuesday, October 30 (women vs. Westmont) and Saturday, November 3 (men vs. Cal Lutheran). Their official home openers are Monday, November 12 (women vs. UC Riverside) and Friday, November 16 (men vs. Washington State).
