MALIBU, Calif. - Waves fans packed Firestone Fieldhouse on Friday night for Blue & Orange Madness, Pepperdine's annual start to college basketball season. They got to meet the new hoops teams and enjoy a night filled with entertainment.

As usual, Sam Lagana served as master of ceremonies, and he began the event by introducing Pepperdine a cappella group Won By One, which sang the national anthem.

Following the official introduction of the Waves' "Competing With Purpose" marketing campaign, the Pom Squad performed for the first time.

A basketball highlight video played to great effect on the newly installed videoboard and got the crowd ready to meet the two teams (complete with Dwyane Wade saying "Roll Waves" at the end), and each player's new introduction video accompanied their entrance onto the court.

Head coaches Marty Wilson and Ryan Weisenberg took turns with the microphone thanking the students for their support and asking them to keep it up this season. They then introduced the King (Keb Doak) and Queen (Christina Harper) of the Waves Court.

Wilson encouraged students to follow him on Twitter and to tweet regularly about the night for the chance to win a pair of Nike ID shoes. That helped to get #Pepperdine trending on Twitter during the event.

The half-court shot for free tuition had its closest call in years, as one student's parent banged a shot off the rim.

The women's basketball team took the court to show off some drills, and then sophomore transfer Haley Videckis bested junior Ea Shoushtari, 10-8, in a three-point contest.

The men then split up to compete in a 10-minute scrimmage. The Blue team (Jeremy Major, Nikolas Skouen, David Jesperson, Stacy Davis, Malte Kramer, Atif Russell, Marley Biyendolo and Jonathan Allen) bested the Orange team (Jett Raines, Austin Mills, Lamond Murray Jr., Jeff Van Dyke, Brendan Lane, Allen Stevens, Malcolm Brooks and Amadi Udenyi) by the score of 31-26.

The Blue was led by Davis (10 points on four dunks), Skouen (eight points with two three-pointers) and Kramer (seven), while Russell, Allen and Jesperson each scored two. For the Orange, Lane had a team-high eight points, followed by Raines (six), Brooks (four), Stevens (three), Van Dyke (three) and Murray (two).

After the Pom Squad and the Step Team put on performances, four students who are the leaders in the Riptide Rewards Program were brought out for a game of musical chairs. The winner, Kirkland Fehrman, got himself a trip to Las Vegas for the 2014 WCC Championships.

The TNT Dunk Squad, a regular at various NBA and NCAA basketball games, entertained the crowd with high-flying routines.

The night ended with the men's and women's basketball teams showing off their dance moves, then inviting the rest of the student body on the floor to join them for the Cupid Shuffle.

The Pepperdine men will have their season opener at home on Nov. 9 against San Diego Christian. The Pepperdine women have an exhibition at home against Westmont on Oct. 30, play their regular-season opener at Seattle on Nov. 8 and have their official home opener against UC Irvine on Nov. 14.
