Kennedy Paces Waves to 90-41 Win over CSLA

MALIBU, Calif. – Daphanie Kennedy had 22 points and seven steals to lead the Pepperdine women’s basketball team to a 90-41 exhibition win over Division II opponent Cal State L.A. on Sunday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Waves shot 46.9% for the game and limited the Golden Eagles to 31.9% shooting. The Waves collected 24 steals, finished with a 44-33 rebounding edge, and outscored Cal State L.A. 50-14 in the second half.

“We had a much better effort today,” Pepperdine Coach Julie Rousseau said. “Daphanie gave us a lift and played the way she’s capable of playing. She was the catalyst in the second half.”

Kennedy (Oakland, Calif./Kearney HS) shot 6-of-13 from the field and finished with four assists and four rebounds to go along with her 22 points and seven steals. She was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.

“I felt really good today,” Kennedy said. “I thought we played great in the second half and we had more pep in our step. We’re coming together as a team in our play. We know who we are, where we are now, and where we need to go.”

Miranda Ayim (London, Ont., Canada/Saunders Secondary) recorded 14 points and five steals, Katie Menton (Yosemite, Calif./Yosemite HS)  registered 11 points, four assists and four steals. Cal State L.A. was led by Ashley Kitchen, who finished with five points and two steals.

“I was pleased with out effort but there’s still a lot to clean up before the first conference game on Friday,” Rousseau said. “The difference between today and Wednesday was the effort”

Up next, the Waves open the regular season at home when they face Cal State Northridge on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
