Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team was handed a 70-60 setback Friday night by the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at the Thunderdome as the Waves bring an end to the 2005 portion of this season's schedule with a fourth consecutive loss.

Pepperdine (3-10) and Santa Barbara (4-6) embarked in a tight battle throughout the opening 20 minutes of play with 14 lead changes and nine ties. The Waves gained an early 8-6 lead before UCSB reclaimed an advantage with consecutive baskets. Pepperdine would hold a two-point 34-32 lead with just over 90 seconds remaining in the first half, but a Gaucho trey provided the 35-34 lead UCSB would enjoy at the break.

The second stanza opened without a score from either team for the first four-plus minutes when Daphanie Kennedy put the Waves back on top, 36-35. But Santa Barbara would record the next eight points of the game. Trailing, 52-40, Pepperdine went on a 12-1 run to trim the UCSB advantage to just one at the 6:22 mark. But that would be as close as the Waves would get as the Gauchos were able to make true on their free throw attempts down the stretch to secure their fourth victory in the last five outings.

Pepperdine was led in scoring by Sherriel Boyd (15) for the second-consecutive game, while Kennedy and Teiosha George added 13 and 11, respectively. George also pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds on the night.

The Waves will open the West Coast Conference portion of their schedule on Fri., Jan. 6, in San Francisco when they take on the Dons. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (PT) at War Memorial Gym. Pepperdine will wrap up its current five-game road swing the following Sunday with a 2 p.m. tilt against San Diego.
