Grace Na added yet another top-20 finish to her career totals while the Pepperdine women's golf team wound up in 11th place as the spring season-opening Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge ended on Wednesday.
Had the Waves posted a 306 for the third straight day they would have moved up a spot and into a tie for ninth. But a 307 gave them a total of 919 (306-306-307), one shot behind Washington and Oregon. The tournament was held at the difficult par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Pepperdine was competing against a very strong field, with six of Golfstat's top 10 in attendance. Nine of the 16 schools were rated in the top 25 and 15 of the 16 were in the top 50. The Waves, rated 34th, ended up ahead of two top-20 teams (Arizona State and Michigan State).
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), a junior, wound up in a tie for 15th place. She improved by a stroke each day (75-74-73), moving her from a tie for 30th to a tie for 23rd to her eventual finish with a total of 222.
Out of 22 career tournaments, it was her 18th top-20 finish, a number that ranks ninth in school history. On Wednesday, Na finished strong with seven pars and a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole over her final eight holes.
Freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) tied for 46th place at 232 (78-76=78), junior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) also tied for 46th at 232 (79-77-76), sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 49th at 232 (74-79-80) and sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 76th at 245 (82-79-84). Playing as an individual, junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) tied for 55th at 234 (80-76-78).
Gillaspy, who also improved her score each day, had four birdies on Wednesday, best by any of the Waves during any round of the tournament. Three of her birdies came in a four-hole stretch on the front nine.
Next up, Pepperdine and UCLA co-host the fourth annual Bruin Wave Invitational at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., on March 4-5.
