Women's Golf in Great Position at Bruin Wave Invitational
Pepperdine is in the running for a team title with #1 USC and #2 UCLA.

TARZANA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's golf team had a strong first day at its own Bruin Wave Invitational and sits within striking distance of the top two teams in the country - USC and UCLA - heading into Tuesday's third and final round.
The Waves led the tournament with a 3-over 291 after Monday morning's first round at the par-72 El Caballero Country Club. And though the Waves improved by a stroke in the afternoon, their total of a 5-over 581 (291-290) was surpassed by the #1 Women of Troy (573) and the #2 Bruins (578).
Still, #17 Pepperdine has a sizable lead over the next three teams, all of whom are ranked among the nation's top 12: Oklahoma State (591), Arizona (594) and Washington (600).
The third round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. As the leaders, USC, UCLA and Pepperdine will tee off the #1 hole beginning at 9:10 a.m.
Three Waves are in the top 10. Sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is in fifth place with a 2-under 142 (72-70), junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for seventh place with an even-par 144 (72-72) and senior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) is tied for ninth with a 1-over 145 (73-72).
Chow had one birdie and one bogey during her morning round, then posted four birdies in the afternoon. Lee recorded four birdies during her first round, then had 18 consecutive pars in the second round. Na collected three birdies in each round.
Competing as individuals, freshman Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay) is tied for 61st place at 160 (82-78), freshman Andrea Unson (Manila, Philippines) is tied for 70th at 163 (84-79) and senior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) is tied for 83rd at 168 (84-84).
This is the fifth annual Bruin Wave Invitational. USC's 11-under 277 in the second round set a tournament single-round record. Doris Chen of the Women of Troy is the individual leader with a 5-under 139 (72-67). Her score of 5-under in the second round tied a tournament 18-hole record.
