Impressive Second-Place Finish for Women's Golf at Bruin Wave Invitational
March 4, 2014
TARZANA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's golf team posted an outstanding second-place finish at its own Bruin Wave Invitational on Tuesday. The Waves couldn't catch top-ranked USC, but passed second-ranked UCLA and finished 10 strokes ahead of the Bruins.
Pepperdine, which had the first-round lead, shot a 12-over 876 (291-290-295) on a tough par-72 course at the El Caballero Country Club. Pepperdine started the day in third place, three strokes behind UCLA and eight behind USC. The Women of Troy, who also led after the second round, shot an 863 to win the tournament for the third time.
The Waves, ranked 17th by Golfstat, defeated four schools in the top 12. Finishing third through sixth were co-host and #2 UCLA (886), #11 Arizona (899), #12 Oklahoma State (903) and #9 Washington (911). The Waves finished better than seven of the eight Pac-12 schools in the field.
"I'm really happy," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "Last week we had a pretty good final round at Irvine and I felt like we would be ready to go. We played really confidently in the first round and to take the lead was exciting. In the second round we played solid, we had a couple of bigger holes coming in, but it was still a solid day. Today they believed in what they started and closed it out. UCLA and USC have such good players and the fact that we were able to play with them and get the experience of being in the final group was so great. I'm really excited and proud of our girls because those are two first-class teams."
Na, a three-time All-American and West Coast Conference Player of the Year, had a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, the second-best round of the day for the entire field. Her round began with two bogeys on the first three holes, but she was flawless the rest of the way, with birdies on five, 16 and 17. Na shot 73-72-71 over the three rounds. She moved into Pepperdine's top five all time for both top-10 (18) and top-20 (27) finishes.
Chow went 72-70-74 for her third top-five finish of the season. She had two birdies on Tuesday, including a long putt on the 18th.
Junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 10th place at 221 (72-72-77) and senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) moved up 12 spots to tie for 16th at 225 (74-78-73). Cheng's final round had five birdies: three straight on seven, eight and nine and two more on 17 and 18.
Junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 76th place at 248 (86-76-86). Competing as individuals, freshman Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay) tied for 52nd at 238 (82-78-78), freshman Andrea Unson (Manila, Philippines) tied for 58th at 240 (84-79-77) and senior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) was 83rd at 258 (84-84-90).
The three big local schools -- Pepperdine, UCLA and USC -- have dominated the five Bruin Wave Invitationals. They've won all three team titles (USC in 2010, 2013 and 2014; UCLA in 2011; Pepperdine in 2012) and have produced four of the five medalists.
USC had the top three finishers in the tournament. Kyung Kim shot a 3-under 213 to take first place, while teammates Doris Chen and Annie Park tied for second with 2-under 214s. Park was the 2013 champion.
"We love having the tournament at El Caballero because the staff is amazing and so accommodating," Gibbs said. "The tournament went very well. The course played incredible considering the beating it took with the rain, so you really have to credit their staff for getting it ready. We want to thank all of the volunteers and SGCA officials. Co-hosting with UCLA is a special thing and I'm honored to do this with them."
Pepperdine's last regular-season tournament is the `Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawaii on March 24-26.
