Women's Golf Opens Seven-Shot Lead at WCC Championships
Pepperdine is going for its 13th consecutive WCC title.
April 14, 2014
BREMERTON, Wash. - All five members of the Pepperdine women's golf team are in the top 10 as the Waves began their quest for a 13th consecutive West Coast Conference title by taking a seven-shot lead after Monday's first round.
Ninth-ranked Pepperdine fired a 3-under 285 at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Club. The 3-under ties the best-ever single round at the WCC Championships, which Pepperdine also recorded in 2003 and 2004. The Waves lead Gonzaga (292) by seven and BYU (299) by 14.
Pepperdine, which has won 15 of the 17 WCC championships ever contested, continues with the second round on Tuesday and the third and final round on Wednesday.
Senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) had the day's best round for the Waves, and she's tied for second place after a 2-under 70 and is just one shot back of Gonzaga's Alice Kim. Cheng had four birdies on the day, including two on her final five holes. A three-time All-WCC first teamer, Cheng is looking for an improved finish after placing eighth twice and seventh once at previous WCC events.
Junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is in fourth place after a 1-under 71. She was 2-over heading down the stretch and then had four birdies and one bogey in her final five holes. Ching, a two-time All-WCC first teamer, tied for third place last year.
Throughout this season, senior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) has gotten better as tournaments go on, and she'll hope that's the case again as she chases her third WCC individual title. Na is tied for fifth place and three shots back after an even-par 72. The three-time All-American had two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th hole.
Junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied with Na in fifth place. Her even-par 72 featured three birdies. Her final 11 holes included two birdies and nine pars.
Sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is tied for ninth place after a 2-over 74. She had two birdies.
