BREMERTON, Wash. - The Pepperdine women's golf team took another step toward its 13th consecutive West Coast Conference title by widening its lead to 13 strokes after Tuesday's second round at the league tournament.
Stronger winds cause scores to go up on Tuesday, but the Waves still managed a 6-over 294 and have a total of a 3-over 579 (285-294) at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Club. Gonzaga sits in second place at 592. The Waves' lead over the Bulldogs was seven strokes after Monday's first round.
Pepperdine, which has won 15 of the 17 WCC championships ever contested, concludes the event with the third and final round on Wednesday.
While all five Pepperdine golfers are in the top eight, it will take some work on Wednesday for one of them to earn medalist honors. Gonzaga's Alice Kim has a four-shot lead with a 4-under 140.
Senior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), the WCC champion last year and in two of the previous three seasons, is closest. She stands in second place with an even-par 144 after her second straight 72. The three-time All-American posted 16 pars and one birdie during the second round.
Right behind Na are senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) in third place with a 1-over 145 (70-75) and sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) in fourth place with a 2-over 146 (74-72). Chow's even-par 72 moved her up five spots and she matched Na's day with 16 pars and one birdie.
Junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for fifth place at 147 (72-75) and junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is tied for eighth place at 71-78 (149). Ching had a team-high three birdies on the day.
