PALO ALTO, Calif. - After a rocky first round at the NCAA West Regional, the Pepperdine women's golf team finds itself six strokes back of the cut line. The Waves are in 17th place and have a number of teams they'll need to jump over the next two days to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Pepperdine shot an opening-round 303 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course. Only the top eight teams will advance, and right now California sits in eighth place with a 297.

On Friday, Pepperdine will be paired up with Baylor and Texas A&M for the second straight round. The three schools are slated to start off hole #10 at 11:50 a.m. The third and final round is on Saturday.

Freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) had the best round of the day for the Waves, a 3-over 74, which ties her for 36th place. Chow had a team-high three birdies. She had two of her birdies on the back nine, which she played at par.

Junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) is tied for 46th place at 75, junior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) and sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) are both tied for 69th place at 77 and sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 89th at 79. Cheng had two birdies during her round.

Earlier in the day, Na was named West Coast Conference Player of the Month for April. She was the medalist at the WCC Championships, leading to her fourth monthly honor of the school year and the sixth of her career.

Pepperdine is aiming to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in 15 years. They'll be held at the University of Georgia Golf Course from May 21-24.
