The Waves are tied for 22nd place after shooting a 306 at the par-72 Vanderbilt Legends Club. Pepperdine will again be paired with Purdue and Texas for Wednesday's second round, and the groups will begin teeing off the first hole at 7:30 a.m. CT.
"There's a lot of golf ahead so we just have to stay patient and positive," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "We started a little slow, then got it going, and then gave it back. We didn't capitalize on some holes coming in. It's just a matter of believing in ourselves. I know they can do it. They've worked so hard for this and they've got their best golf ahead. I have a lot of faith."
After starting on the 10th tee, the Waves had a few early bogeys, but then put together a string of birdies right before the turn. Over the first nine holes, Pepperdine's four scoring players were only 4-over. But birdies were harder to come by on the second nine holes, and the Waves' score started to go up.
Pepperdine's top scorers on the day were its two freshmen, Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS). Ching is tied for 34th place after a 2-over 74, while Lee is tied for 47th place after a 3-over 75.
Sophomore Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for 85th place with a 77, while senior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and sophomore Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) both shot 80 and are tied for 112th place.
Ching and Lee both had three birdies, while Cheng and Na both had one.
Pepperdine is making its 11th appearance at the NCAA Championships, and the Waves are the only non-BCS school among this year's field of 24 teams. The Waves have four top-five and eight top-10 finishes in their history.
