Waves Still Lead at Golfweek Conference Challenge

VAIL, Colo. - The Pepperdine women's golf team has taken a two-shot lead after Tuesday's second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, and the Waves will be going for their second title at the event in four years.

The Waves entered the day tied for first place and are now in sole possession at the top of the leaderboard. The Waves shot a 1-over 289 at the par-72 Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club on Tuesday, and have a two-day total of a 1-under 575 (286-289). It's a two or possibly three-team race at this point, with UC Davis at 1-over and defending champion Oklahoma at 10-over. Mississippi is in fourth place at 20-over.

Pepperdine, UC Davis and Oklahoma will be paired up together for Wednesday's third and final round, which begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. MT.

Pepperdine won the Golfweek Conference Challenge in 2009 when it was held at the Primm Valley Desert Resorts in Primm, Nev. The annual event brings together schools from 18 different conferences.

Junior Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), a two-time All-American, is in the running for her third collegiate title. She's in second place with a 5-under 139 (69-70) and is just one shot back of the leader, Demi Runas of UC Davis. Na had five birdies on the day. She had three on the first five holes to go 3-under, and then had birdies on the 16th and the 18th.

Sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) kept pace near the top of the leaderboard, as she moved up a couple of spots and into a tie for fourth place with a 1-under 143 (71-72). She was 4-over after 11 holes but finished her round with four birdies on the final seven holes to get back to even-par for the day.

Sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 11th place with a 2-over 146 (71-75). Freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) moved up 22 spots on the ladder thanks to an even-par 72, and she is now tied for 30th place at 150 (78-72). Three of her four birdies came on the final five holes. Junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for 38th place at 152 (75-77).
