Women's Golf Wraps Up Fall Season in Texas as Na Posts Another Strong Finish
Grace Na posted her 11th top 10 and her 17th top 20 in her 21st career tournament.
Oct. 30, 2012
Grace Na led the way individually again with a sixth-place result and a 3-under 213.
Pepperdine shot a 295 for the second straight day at the par-72 University of Texas Golf Club, which was good enough to move up two spots on the leaderboard and end with a total of 897 (307-295-295). Four of the teams that finished ahead of the Waves were in Golfstat's top 20 and seven were in the top 40.
"Our fall season was a good learning experience," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "We had a lot of positives, though we didn't exactly play the way we wanted. We were inconsistent, but we know what we need to focus on to be ready in the spring. Everyone knows they can play, we just need to keep working and be ready to have a really solid spring season."
It speaks to the quality of Na's fall season that at sixth place, she actually ended up with her worst finish out of the four fall tournaments. Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) tied for fourth at the Dick McGuire Invitational, tied for second at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and tied for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
Still, Na finished on a good note as she posted an even-par 72 in the final round that included three birdies. She shot 71-70-72 over the three days, adding two more sub-par rounds to bring her season total to seven (out of 12 total).
"Grace has been fabulous," Gibbs said. "She's absolutely one of the top players in the country. I know she will continue to play this way and have a great spring. I'm very proud of her."
Na, a two-time All-American and West Coast Conference Player of the Year, ended her spring season with a stroke average of 71.33. She posted her 11th top 10 and her 17th top 20 in her 21st career tournament.
After Na, freshman Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) tied for 31st place at 223 (75-74-74), sophomore Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 55th at 230 (82-75-73), sophomore Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) tied for 58th at 231 (79-76-76) and junior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) took 71st at 236 (83-76-77).
Chow had three birdies (which came consecutively on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes) and Cheng and Ching each had two.
The Waves begin their spring season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 11-13.
