MALIBU, Calif. – Golfweek is counting down its top 30 squads heading into the fall season, and the Pepperdine women’s golf team checks in at #15 in the publication’s national rankings today.
The Waves will be looking for their 13th consecutive West Coast Conference championship this spring, and will try to make it back to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time after a one-year absence.
“We look forward to a successful season with all six players returning and the addition of two freshmen,” Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. “Our three seniors will lead the way for the Waves. Our fall schedule has four very competitive tournaments and it will be important that all five players in the lineup are contributing each round for the team to win.”
Three-time All-American Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) is highlighted as the “go-to girl” by Golfweek, and for good reason. Na returns for her senior season after a spectacular junior campaign. She earned All-American first team honors from both Golfweek and the WGCA, finished #8 in the final Golfstat rankings and #9 by Golfweek/Sagarin, and set the school’s single-season scoring record (72.17 strokes per round). She also holds Pepperdine’s career scoring record (73.31).
The Waves also return three other 2013 All-WCC first teamers in senior Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand), junior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS). Senior Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph’s HS) and junior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) are two more veterans back. The Waves have added two incoming freshmen, Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Asuncion Christian Academy) and Andrea Unson (Manilla, Phillippines/Walkersville Christian).
Pepperdine opens the fall season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on September 20-21.
