No. 8 Pepperdine Battled to a 3-2 Victory Over Visiting Pacific

MALIBU, Calif.- After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Pepperdine women's soccer team held on through a hard fought game to defeat visiting Pacific 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

Sophomore forward Amanda LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) led the way with two goals for the Waves (3-0-0), including notching the game-winning goal for the second-straight contest. Freshman Mandy Davis(Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) also found the back of the net in the victory, putting away her first career goal.

On the game, head coach Tim Wardsaid, "Great weekend. Great result today, especially because of all the adversities out team had been dealing with this week. I am really proud of the girls. I have a lot respect for Pacific. Their head coach Keith Coleman does a great job with his program. All in all, awesome weekend for the Waves and we are just going to try and get better."

The Waves took an early 1-0 lead in the 10TH minute as sophomore forward Lynn Williams(Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) made an excellent run down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross that LeCave was able to get her head on and put away in to the back of the goal.

Pacific (0-3-0) fought back, and in the 36th minute the Tigers scored the equalizer as the ball bounced around in front of the goal and came out to Haylee Bettencourt at the top of the box who sent a shot into the back of the net to put the score at 1-1.

In what was a physical game, with a combined 19 fouls called, Davis took advantage of one of those foul's ensuing free kicks. At the 39:46 mark she sent the direct kick shot from about 30 yards out on the left side of the field into the upper corner on the right side of the goal to put the Waves back on top, 2-1.

The score at the half would stand at 2-1, Pepperdine, with the Waves outshooting the Tigers 11 to 8. Goalkeeper Erinn Middo(Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) made foul saves in the half and held off five Pacific corner kick opportunity in the half.

The Waves 2-1 lead held until the 69th minute, when LeCave again found herself in front of the goal, the recipient of a great pass from Anisa Guajardo(Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) from the right side. LeCave took a hard, low, shot that ricocheted off a Tiger defender's foot and into the back of the net to give the Waves a 3-1 lead.

Both teams continued to battle and the Tigers were able to sneak one more goal in at the 8:34 mark as Maricela Padilla found the lower right corner of the net to put the score at 3-2.

The Waves held on through the final whistle and the 3-2 result stood. Middo earned her second victory in her second collegiate start. She finished with 8 saves, including a few stellar saves on shots she punched over the crossbar.

On the Waves' scoring efforts, Ward added, "Our first goal really was a thing of beauty. Lynn's cross and Amanda's finish was just out of this world. It was great to see Mandy Daviscome in and really do a nice job. Besides scoring a goal, just her presence in midfield was really strong."

Next up the Waves will head out to San Diego State in their first road contest of the season on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. PT.
