MALIBU, Calif. - Junior forward Myriah Stockman scored in the first minute of the game and junior forward Laura Cole slotted home a second-half penalty kick to lift the Pepperdine women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth on Sunday at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
The Waves are now unbeaten in their last three games and improved to 4-2-1. The Big Green, which was coming off a 1-1 tie at #17 San Diego, dropped to 1-2-1.
Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) got the Waves off to a fabulous start with a goal off a free kick just 56 seconds into the contest. After one of the Waves was fouled outside the right-hand-side of the penalty area, Stockman took aim and found the far corner of the goal before Dartmouth could get fully set up. Normally a starting defender, it was Stockman's first career goal.
But the Big Green countered in the 21st minute. Dartmouth's Aly O'Dea wound up with the ball about 35 yards away and looped a high shot toward the goal. Pepperdine's goalkeeper was just far enough off her line that O'Dea's shot was able to make it over her head and just under the crossbar.
The Waves nearly took the lead back four minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Ana Pontes (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake HS) took a shot that was deflected, hit the inside of the left post and bounced across the front of the goal mouth before it was cleared. Instead, the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
The Waves eventually got the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute. One of the Waves played a long, high ball into the box. It took a tall bounce, and both junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic/Boston College) and one of Dartmouth's defenders went after it. Spacciapolli got knocked down and a penalty kick was awarded.
Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) calmly scored her team-high fifth goal of the season and 11th of her career. She's now scored in three consecutive games, and it was her third game-winning goal of the season. In fact, the Waves are unbeaten (4-0-1) this season when Cole scores, and 0-2 when she's kept off the scoresheet.
"It was a great win," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "Dartmouth is a good team, well-coached, and they'll do some good things in the Ivy League. We started really well. Myriah scored a really tremendous goal. She recognized something that nobody else did, because we were all shouting at her to do something else. After it became 1-1, we responded well in the second half and deserved a goal. We had the better chances. I'm proud of our performance."
Pepperdine played superb defense in the second half, holding Dartmouth to just one shot over the final 45 minutes. The Waves finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots (6-2 shots on goal).
Next weekend, Pepperdine takes part in the Hawaii Outrigger Hotels Soccer Classic, where they will face Washington State (Saturday, Sept. 18) and host Hawaii (Sunday, Sept. 19).
