Waves Down San Diego State 2-0 on Lynn Williams' Brace
All-American candidate tallies third multi-goal match of the season; Hannah Seabert with second straight shutout for the Waves.
Sept. 15, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine put together another solid defensive effort and Lynn Williams did the rest scoring twice in a 2-0 non-conference victory against San Diego State Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. The Waves (4-2-1) posted their second straight shutout and avenged a 1-0 loss on the Aztecs’ (1-4-2) home pitch last season.
Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) continues to dazzle, registering her seventh and eighth goal in Pepperdine’s seventh match of 2013. The All-American candidate notched her second consecutive game-winner (ninth career) in the 38th minute and followed with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute.
“It was a great weekend for us,” Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. “Any time you can get two wins against programs with the history and tradition of USC and San Diego State – these are just great results. We couldn’t have asked for more. The attitudes and performance were outstanding. It was a real team effort. We defended really, really well again from Hannah (Seabert) to our back four, which is playing better and better as a unit. Lynn got the goals today but other players created some dangerous opportunities.”
It is the third multi-goal match of the season for Williams and the fifth of her standout career. The two scoring strikes move the junior into sole possession of seventh place on the career goals list with 22 and ninth place on the points list with 56.
Meagan Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) assisted on the first scoring strike, collecting an errant pass and sent a through ball up the middle to a streaking Williams, who beat Aztec keeper Melanie Vaughn to the near post from 10 yards. It is the first collegiate point for Harbison.
All-American Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) tallied her inaugural assist of the year in the second goal, feeding Williams for a breakaway. Williams streaked past the charging keeper and buried it into the empty net from point blank range. It is the 16th career assist for the senior, good for a share of ninth place on the all-time list.
San Diego State held a 21-15 shots advantage, including a 15-6 edge in shots on goal. Williams attempted a match-high six, four on target, including a chance which clanged off the cross bar in the first period. Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) fired three shots, one on frame. Ally Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) also had a dangerous opportunity in the first half on two shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) was tested early and often, but posted her second straight shutout and third of the season. Seabert corralled a career-high 15 saves, good for a share of second place on the single-match record book.
Pepperdine continues its six-match homestand Friday, September 20 when it welcomes No. 5 UCLA. Match time against the Bruins is set for 3:00 p.m. at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in a contest featuring a live video broadcast on PepperdineSports.com via Wavecasts.
