FRESNO, Calif. - No. 8 Pepperdine fought to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Fresno State on Sunday, marking the fifth overtime match of the year for the Waves. Dating back to last season, the Waves are unbeaten in 13 straight-games, setting a new all-time record for women's soccer. Anisa Guajardo led the team Sunday as she scored the lone goal of the game for the Waves and has netted a score in the last three straight games.
The match was a homecoming for freshman forward Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and junior Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS), both Valley natives. The pair came out strong in front of family and friends, leading the team with seven shots apiece and worked together to put the Waves ahead 1-0 just 2:02 into the first half. Williams passed the ball to Guajardo at the top of the box who sent a hard shot into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was Guajardo's team-leading eighth goal of the match and the seventh assist of the season for Williams.
With the early goal the team did not sit upon the lead, but in true Waves fashion continued to battle and fight hard. At the 10 minute mark Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) had a shot blocked and Guajardo narrowly missed her second goal of the game in the 15th minute when she had her shot hit the post. The Bulldogs were not going to go down easily on their home field and made goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) make two key saves at the 27:46 and 36:28 marks to preserve the lead going into halftime.
At the break the Waves had outshot the Bulldogs, 11-8 and forced Bulldog goalkeeper Katie DeVault to make six saves to Barker's three.
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Waves continued to fight for another score, as Williams, Cole and Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) had some excellent shots. The Bulldogs continued to fight as well, as Barker was forced to make a big save in the 57th minute. At the 72:18 mark the Bulldogs earned a corner kick and Molly Nizzoli found Kayla Kret, who put away the header to tie the game up a 1-1. In the last 18 minutes of regulation the teams went back and forth, with Barker making saves on the defensive end for the Waves and Williams having two excellent shots that forced DeVault to make big saves for the Bulldogs. Despite outshooting the Bulldogs 13-9 in the second half, the teams headed into overtime.
In the first overtime period Barker made two big saves for the Waves and the team had little offensive production, with only one shot from Cole in the five-minute period. With the score still tied at 1-1, the Waves were set to head into their fourth double-overtime match of the season.
The Waves earned two corner kicks for excellent scoring opportunities in the second overtime period, but were unable to find the back of the net. Barker made one save in the period and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
With an overall record of 8-0-4 the Waves remain the only undefeated team in the West Coast Conference. The squad will have the upcoming weekend off as they prepare for WCC action beginning October 6 as they host San Diego for a 3 p.m. tilt at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
