Waves Play to 1-1 Draw With Cal Poly
The Waves open up WCC play next week with two games at home.
MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Cal Poly today at home, getting an early second-half goal from Emily Tanaka to avoid defeat.
The Waves move to 5-3-2 with the draw and Cal Poly moves to 4-2-5 on the year. It was Tanaka's first goal of her career.
The visiting Mustangs struck first, scoring in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Elise Krieghoff got loose in the box, received the pass from Chelsea Barry and beat Waves' keeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) to her right side. It was Krieghoff's third goal of the year.
Pepperdine had chances later in the half to equalize, but couldn't come up with a goal before the break. Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) had the best chance of the half in the 38th minute, but her shot from the top of the box went high.
It was early in the second half when Tanaka (Kailua, Hawaii/'Iolani School) found the back of the net. Meghan Schoen (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood HS) fired off a shot in the middle of the box that was blocked by a Cal Poly defender, but it bounced right to Tanaka, who collected the ball and slotted it in the left side of the net.
The Waves had plenty of opportunities in the second half, firing off 11 shots to just four for Cal Poly. Schoen put one off the crossbar in the 77th minute and then Mikayla Arcebido (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon HS) had an opportunity in the box, but her shot was deflected wide in the 83rd minute.
Pepperdine had three shots in the first overtime, the last of which was put on target by Rodriguez, but the Mustang keeper was there for the save. The Waves got off the only shot of the final overtime period as neither team could manufacture anything in the last 10 minutes of play.
The Waves had an overall shot lead of 22-11 in the game and held a 5-3 corner kick edge. Rylee Baisden (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and Rodriguez each took four shots.
Pepperdine will be back in action next week when they open WCC play against Pacific on Friday. The Waves then host Saint Mary's on Sunday.
