Pepperdine Dominates Santa Clara 5-0 on the Road
The last team to beat the Broncos by five or more goals at home was Stanford in 2008.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In 11 games at Santa Clara since 1994, the Pepperdine women's soccer team was still looking for its first win at the perennial WCC power's home coming into play on Sunday. The Waves got that first win in style, handing the Broncos their worst loss at home since 2008 with a 5-0 win.
Pepperdine got on the board early with a penalty kick in the 16th minute and never let up, moving to 8-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play with the big early-season WCC win.
The Waves' defense was again phenomenal, posting its third shutout in a row and seventh in 12 games this year. Pepperdine has given up just five goals all season and has yet to allow more than one to an opponent. Brielle Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) came up with six saves to pick up her eighth win in net for the Waves.
Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) got the Waves on the board with a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box in the 16th minute, scoring her first of two goals on the day. Freshman Joelle Anderson (San Jose, Calif./Harker School) would score the next two goals, including one just seconds into the second half, to essentially put the game out of reach. Calista Reyes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) and Visalli added the exclamation points late in the game.
16' - Pepperdine, Bri Visalli (6th of the season), no assist (PK) - Visalli added to her team-leading goal total with a penalty kick in the 16th minute. The senior midfielder also drew the penalty in the box with a nifty cutback to the center of the area.
46' - Pepperdine, Joelle Anderson (3rd of the season), assisted by Alex Marmureanu - Just 26 seconds into the second half, Pepperdine drove down the field and Marmureanu (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount HS/Texas Tech) sent a cross to the top of the box where Anderson sent home her first of two goals of the game.
61' - Pepperdine, Joelle Anderson (4th of the season), assisted by Michelle Maemone - Maemone (San Jose, Calif./The King's Academy) sent a ball ahead to Anderson on the break, giving the freshman a one-on-one chance against the Bronco's keeper, who she beat low for her second goal.
79' - Pepperdine, Calista Reyes (2nd of the season), assisted by Jamie Van Horn - Reyes got the ball at the top of the box on a long pass from Van Horn (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) and fired in a shot for the fourth goal of the game.
87' - Pepperdine, Visalli (7th of the season), assisted by Brie Welch - Visalli picked up her seventh score of the year, fighting her way into the box to get to a ball played in by Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS) and knock it in off of a Santa Clara player.

"What an amazing performance, result and weekend for the Waves," said head coach Tim Ward. "Our girls put such a great performance in today, especially considering the energy we spent on Friday night. It's a testament to the character of this team and every single one of these women. Everyone played their role with class and quality today. The goals, the assists, the defending, the goalkeeping; simply brilliant against a very good Santa Clara team. We know we have a long way to go to defend our WCC crown, but we will enjoy this one today."
Pepperdine is back in Southern California to take on crosstown rivals Loyola Marymount in the team's lone game next week.
