No. 3 Waves Fight to 2-1 Home Victory Over Portland
The Waves earn the comeback win off goals from Lynn Williams and Laura Cole.
Oct. 30, 2011
MALIBU, Calif. - No. 3 Pepperdine scored two goals late in the first half to earn a come-from-behind victory over visiting Portland 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The tying goal was scored by freshman Lynn Williams and the go-ahead goal was netted by Laura Cole off a penalty kick. With the win the Waves get back on track to winning ways and are 14-1-4 on the season and 6-1-0 in West Coast Conference play.
After going down 13 minutes into the first half off a Pilots' goal by Micaela Capelle, the Waves had to fight to get back into the game as they were behind for only the fourth time all season. The squad slowly found their rhythm and pushed the Pilots into their defensive third of the field.
In the 37th minute Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) made a streaking run down the right side of the field and passed it off to Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) who took a touched and fired a low, hard shot across the front of the goal that slotted right into the left corner of the net. The goal, her sixth of the season, tied the game up at 1-1.
The Waves continued to force things on the offensive side, and in the 42nd minute Michelle Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) was fouled in the box and the Waves were awarded a penalty kick. Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) finished off the penalty to give the Waves a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
At the half Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) had two saves and despite the early deficit the Waves outshot the Pilots 7-4.
In the second half the Waves picked up where they left off as Cole and Myriah Stockman (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) had two excellent scoring opportunities that narrowly missed finding the back of the net. Cole's shot in the 50th minute sailed over the goal and at the 58:23 mark Stockman launched a shot that hit off the crossbar. In the 61st minute Cole was a part of a strong give-and-go play, but Pilots' goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung was able to make the save.
The Pilots pushed things at the end of the half to try for the equalizer, but Barker and the Waves' defensive back line held strong to hold the 2-1 victory.
The Waves outshot the Pilots 17-9 in the game and earned five corner kicks to their four. Barker finished with four saves to earn her 14th win of the season.
The Waves have one game left in the regular season, as they will host San Francisco at 3 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4) at Tari Frahm Rokus Field, in what will be senior day for Cole, Stockman and Karissa Garcia (Roseville, Calif./Oakmont HS).
