MALIBU, Calif. – Recent Pepperdine soccer Alumna, Carolyn Dapper, was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship this week, as one of five Seaver College grads to join the elite ranks. She will travel to Slovakia as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant.
Dapper joined the Waves soccer program in 2010, red-shirting one season before making her collegiate debut in 2011. She then took a year off from the program to focus on her studies as a junior. This past season, with the Waves in need of a backup goalkeeper and senior mentor, Dapper rejoined the program, making two appearances on the year.
“I think the world of Carolyn,” said Pepperdine Head Coach Tim Ward. “She has been and continues to be a major blessing to our program. Her willingness to come back to the team when she found out we were short on goalkeepers and her willingness to mentor the younger players is a perfect picture of sacrifice and shepherding. We are so proud of her and it doesn’t surprise us that she received this scholarship.”
Following her Fulbright experience Dapper hopes to pursue a PhD in political science and will use the scholarship opportunity to prepare for her future in teaching and research.
"It will give me ample experience working closely with students and honing my skills as a teacher in ways that will be quite valuable to me as a professor," said Dapper. "It also gives me a chance to experience field work for the first time, which, as a PhD I will hopefully do a great deal of as I research and write."
The Fulbright program, America's flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The program operates in over 150 countries worldwide.
Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
