Waves Tabbed Third, Visalli All-WCC in Preseason Poll
The Waves have finished in the top three of the WCC standings in four of the last six years.
MALIBU, Calif. – The 2017 West Coast Conference Preseason Women’s Soccer Poll was released this week and Pepperdine was picked to finish third. Bri Visalli was also named to the preseason all-conference team.
Santa Clara narrowly edged BYU for the top spot in the 2017 preseason poll, picking up five first-place votes and 76 overall points, while the Cougars had 75 points and five first-place votes as well. Pepperdine garnered 68 total points, followed by PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount with 57 points and Portland with 46 points to round out the top five.
The Waves are coming off of their third WCC title last year after going 12-5-4 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play. Pepperdine made a run into the second round of the NCAA Tournament after beating California on penalty kicks to advance.
The Waves and Cougars finished tied atop the 2016 WCC standings, but Pepperdine grabbed the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after beating BYU 1-0 in the teams’ lone head-to-head meeting.
Visalli returns for her senior season after being named to the All-WCC second team last year. The Pepperdine midfielder was tied for second on the team with 11 total points in 2016, scoring five goals and posting one assist. Visalli earned All-WCC first team honors as a sophomore in 2015 and was named to the WCC All-Freshman team in 2014.
Pepperdine opens the regular season on Aug. 18 when the Waves take on Texas A&M in a neutral site game held at the University of San Diego. The Waves also take on Virginia Tech in San Diego on Aug. 20. Pepperdine’s home opener will be Aug. 25 against Texas Tech.
