Lynn Williams named Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week

Sep 3, 2013

MALIBU, Calif. – Lynn Williams led the Waves to a 2-0-1 record to start the 2013 season, including a pair of results against top-25 opponents and captured Disney Soccer/NSCAA Division I National Player of the Week honors in the process. A MAC Hermann Award Watch List pick, Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) scored back-to-back game-winners against Wright State and at No. 19 Texas A&M.

With the selection Williams becomes just the second Wave to earn national player of the week accolades and the first awarded by the NSCAA. Goalkeeper Lacey Heck earned Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week selection Sept. 15, 2008 after posting back-to-back shutout wins against Tennessee (2-0) and Washington State (1-0).

Williams recorded a world class goal against the Raiders firing a rocket to the far post from 25 yards. The Fresno native was not done. At Texas A&M, Williams was held without a shot in the first 20 minutes of the road contest at Texas A&M. She broke out in dramatic fashion in the second half, scoring two goals in less than two minutes against the Aggies and sealed Pepperdine’s upset win with an assist on the insurance goal by Kristen Rodriguez.

It was the third multi-goal match of her standout career and the junior now has seven career game-winning strikes. For the week, Williams registered seven points and fired 18 shots, nine of them on target en route to her first career WCC Player of the Week selection. Williams also was tabbed for the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and was selected as player of the Week by

WAVES CRASH THE POLLS: After posting a 1-1 home deadlock against No. 18 Cal, a 1-0 victory against Wright State and a convincing 3-1 road triumph at No. 19 Texas A&M, Pepperdine cracked both the NSCAA (No. 22) and Soccer America (No. 23) national Division I polls.

OFF TO A FAST START: Freshman forward Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) is off to a strong start to her career and has scored two goals to go along with an assist for five points in three career matches. Rodriguez not only made her collegiate debut last Monday vs. No. 18 California, but she also scored Pepperdine’s only goal of the match on her birthday, no less. Rodriguez assisted on Williams’ first goal at No. 19 Texas A&M Sunday before adding an insurance goal in the 3-1 upset win in College Station, Texas.

BIG SHOES TO FILL: Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) played a key role in helping Pepperdine to a undefeated 2-0-1 start to the 2013 campaign. Seabert replaces program career wins leader and Olympian Roxanne Barker. Seabert turned in her first shutout victory with a 1-0 blanking of Wright State (9/29) and owns an 0.62 GAA with 21 saves in three starts.

UP NEXT FOR THE WAVES: Pepperdine continues its four-match road trip with a Midwest swing starting Friday, September 6 at No. 14 Michigan. Kick off against the Wolverines is set for 2:00 p.m. (PT) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
