No. 22 Waves Host No. 23 Cal in Opening Round of 2012 NCAA Tournament
Pepperdine Makes Second Straight NCAA Postseason Appearance
Nov. 5, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine earned its second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and will host No. 23 Cal on Saturday, November 10 in a 1:00 p.m. match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. The No. 22 Waves earned the opportunity to host for the second consecutive year in their seventh overall postseason appearance.
The winner of Saturday’s match will advance to take on the victor in the Cal State Northridge at No. 2 seed San Diego State contest. Site and date of the second round is to be determined.
“It’s an awesome achievement just to get back to the NCAA Tournament,” Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. “It’s not an easy thing to do and for our program this is something that we want to do every year and it is our goal as a program every year. We are really proud of the team for doing well this year and giving us an opportunity to do this.”
After capturing the West Coast Conference Championship in 2011, Pepperdine posted a third place showing in one of the nation’s elite conferences in 2012. The Waves finished with a regular season record of 12-6-0, 5-3-0 during league play.
Cal posted a 15-5-0 slate in 2012 and went 8-3-0 in Pac-12 action. The Golden Bears outscored their opponents 43-21 this season. Pepperdine holds a 1-0-2 record in the all-time series against Cal dating to the 1999 season, including a season-opening 2-1 triumph in Berkeley last season.
"Cal is a great soccer program with great tradition,” Ward said. “We have a lot of respect for what they do up there. We just hope to have a good week of preparation and get some people healthy. I think this is fun for our girls.”
Pepperdine owns an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 6-6 and have advanced to the second round in four of six trips, including Sweet 16 appearances in 2002 and 2005. Last season the Waves dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision to Long Beach State in the program’s first ever postseason home contest.
The Golden Bears make their 20th overall postseason appearance and 14th in the last 15 years and own an all-time NCAA Tournament slate of 13-19-2. Cal was eliminated by Boston College in the second round on penalty kicks in 2011.
