Waves a perfect 6-for-6 to beat Florida International in the season opener.
March 9, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The #1-ranked Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team opened the 2013 season today at Zuma Beach and defeated #8 Florida International 5-0. The Waves are now 15-0 all-time in dual play.
“We saw a lot of great volleyball out there today and FIU has a talented team, especially considering this is their first season and just their second match ever,” said head coach Nina Matthies. “I think our team had a small case of the opening day butterflies – the wind didn’t help – put I’m proud of their composure out there. We won all six matches today so I have no complaints.”
The morning opened with the No. 4 and No. 5 pairs.
Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) put the Waves on the board, defeating Jessica Gehrke and Tina Toghyani in straight sets from the No. 5 spot in the lineup.
At No. 4, Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) won an exciting first set, 26-24, before being edged 19-21 in the second vs. Camila Rosado and Jessica Mendoza. In the deciding frame, Racich and Cook jumped out to an 8-2 advantage and held on to win 15-8. Racich clinched the match with an ace – her seventh of the contest.
In an extra match that did not count towards the dual score, Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and Lauren Sieckmann (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn South/Wayne State College) both made their collegiate sand debut with a 21-14, 21-12 triumph over Laura Duffy and Alexa Diaz. Messing set the tone at the net with three blocks, while Sieckmann delivered an impressive 11 service aces.
After a brief intermission, the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 pairs took to the courts.
Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) gave Pepperdine a 3-0 lead after downing Camila Rosado and Jessica Mendoza in straight sets. The “Kelly’s” opened the match strong, stringing together a 7-0 run to take a 17-4 lead. The Waves continued to dictate the tempo and put the match away 21-5, 21-11. Together, they totaled 10 aces and limited the Golden Panthers to just eight kills.
On Court 2, Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) defeated Ksenia Sukhareva and Emily Podscheweit 21-11, 21-18. Although the opposing pairs were tied late in the second set, 17-17, Racich and Dykstra closed things out with a 4-1 run to secure the match.
In the top match and last to finish, Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) were in a heated battle with Kate Stepanova and Maryna Samoday. Hill, Frederick and Stepanova were all AVCA All-Americans last season (Stepanova played for Florida State in 2012).
After winning the first set 24-22, the Waves dropped set two 18-21. Similar to Racich and Cook’s match, Hill and Frederick jumped out to an 11-4 lead to command the final frame and put the match away 15-7.
Hill finished with 20 kills on the day, while Frederick picked up 16 digs.
Hill and Frederick are the only pair today who also played together last season.
The Waves continue the 2013 season with the Chula Vista Tournament on March 14-17 at the Olympic Training Center. In addition to Pepperdine, CSU Bakersfield, Nebraska, Florida State and Grand Canyon are scheduled to be in attendance.
