Top-Ranked Waves Prevail over #9 LSU, #13 FIU

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – The top-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team had a pair of tough matches against No. 9 LSU and No. 13 FIU to close out the East Meets West Challenge at Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, prevailing with a pair of hard-fought 3-2 wins.

The Waves (10-2) hold on to undefeated records against both the Tigers (6-6) and the Panthers (6-4) after today’s victories.

In the first match of the day against No. 9 LSU, the Waves lost first sets on four courts for the Tigers to pull ahead early. On court two, Deahna Kraft and Corinne Quiggle stayed tough for a pair of 21-13 set wins over Haleigh Nelson and Hunter Domanski to set the tone and put the Waves up early on the day. LSU then took the match on court three to even the score 1-1.

The Waves on courts one, four and five battled out second set wins to force third sets and stay alive in the match. Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone would win the first third set to give Pepperdine the advantage again with a 17-21, 21-19, 15-11 win over Olivia Powers and Gina Tillis in the No. 4 position.

Brook Bauer and Madalyn Roh hung tough in the No. 1 position against Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss. After dropping the first set 21-17, the Waves battled back for a 23-21 second set win. The pair then clinched the overall match with a 15-10 third set win for the Waves. LSU closed up the morning with a 15-13 final set win on court five to make the final 3-2.

Against No. 13 FIU, the Waves came out strong on three courts after securing first set wins on courts two through four. Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez opened the match by rolling past their opponents Erika Zembyla and Anabela Sataric on court three with a 21-8, 21-9 win to put the Waves on the board. Caputo and Filippone followed with their 12th-consecutive win of the season with a 22-20, 21-7 victory over Estefanie Bethancourt and Natalia Giron in the No. 4 position for a 2-0 Waves’ lead.

Kraft and Quiggle would do the honors, clinching the overall win with a 21-17, 21-9 win over Lina Bernier and Dorina Klinger in the No. 2 slot and putting Pepperdine up 3-0. After falling in the first set on courts one and five, the Waves battled back to force third sets on each court. Despite big efforts, FIU picked up the third set wins to make it a 3-2 final dual score.
