CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The #1 Pepperdine women's sand volleyball team opened the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge with a pair of victories today at the Olympic Training Center to improve to 3-0 on the season and 17-0 all-time. The Waves first overcame a 0-2 deficit to top #4 Florida State, 3-2, before cruising to a 5-0 triumph over #9 Nebraska.
The Seminoles (4-2) got the leg up on Pepperdine, winning matches from the No. 4 and No. 5 positions to take a 2-0 lead. The Waves' No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 duos came through, however, and all won to put the final score at 3-2.
"I thought we played really well, especially considering this was just our second and third matches of the season," said head coach Nina Matthies, "We had a few tough losses at the bottom of the lineup, but we buckled down and really took the challenge. I'm really proud of how the team never gave up and just kept on fighting.
"Florida State and Nebraska are both very athletic, talented teams," continued Matthies. "They both put a lot of pressure on us and we learned a lot."
FSU edged Pepperdine at No. 4 and No. 5, beginning with Mallory Kiley and Sarah Wickstrom's 27-25, 25-23 triumph over Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS).
Sisters Nina and Stephanie Pellitteri gave the Seminoles a 2-0 lead after topping Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois), 21-14, 18-21, 15-13.
The No. 1-3 pairs all took the court in must-win situations. Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) showed their veteran poise, putting away a 21-15, 21-13 decision vs. Jace Pardon and Julie Brown.
With the score tied up at two, the fate of the dual rested on the shoulders of Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) in the No. 2 match. The duo dropped the first set to Aurora Davis and Fatma Yildrim 15-21, before storming back 21-14 in the second frame.
The third and final set saw the Waves take a 13-10 lead before the Seminoles went on a 4-1 run to knot things up at 14-all. After a Pepperdine sideout, Dykstra stepped to the service line and dished out an ace to clinch the match and the dual victory for the Waves.
Pepperdine didn't have long to celebrate the win and immediately returned to the courts to face #9 Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers opened their first-ever season of sand volleyball earlier today at the Olympic Training Center with a 4-1 loss to FSU.
The Waves were dominant against their Midwest foes, winning four of the five matches in straight sets. Cook and Taylor Racich stumbled in the first frame, 17-21, but rebounded with 21-15, 15-4 wins in the second and third stanzas to secure the sweep.
Pepperdine continues action at the USAV Collegiate Challenge tomorrow with a dual vs. Grand Canyon at noon. A pairs championship begins on Friday afternoon and continues on through Saturday.
