MIAMI – The #1 Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team was simply dominant during the opening day of the FIU Surf and Turf Tournament on the campus of Florida International. The Waves first swept Florida Atlantic before shutting out the #6-ranked Panthers.
Pepperdine, 8-0 on the season, opened the tournament versus Florida Atlantic and won all five matches in straight sets.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) were untouchable in the No. 1 match, downing Alessia Pizzoccheri and Jelena Jovanovic 21-6, 21-7.
The Waves’ No. 2-5 duos were equally as impressive and allowed on average less than 11 points per set.
In the second match of the day vs. tournament host and #6-ranked FIU, the Waves defeated the home team 5-0. Pepperdine opened the 2013 season vs. the Panthers at Zuma Beach on March 13 and emerged victorious by the same score.
Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) rebounded from their loss on Tuesday at USC with a 21-14, 21-18 triumph over Jessica Mendoza and Maryna Samoday from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), playing in just their third match together, topped Maria Coukoulis and Laura Duffy in straight sets. Adelhelm had a solid day defensively, totaling eight blocks across the two matches. Racich added eight aces on Friday.
