April 13, 2014
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – Victoria Adelhelm and Sophie Asprey of the #2 Pepperdine sand volleyball team produced a perfect 4-0 record today at the USAV Collegiate Challenge to win the bronze bracket title. Additionally, Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever finished runner up in the gold bracket.
Today’s pairs championship was divided into four brackets based on dual lineup position: the No. 1 teams competed in the gold bracket, the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs in the silver bracket, the No. 4 and No. 5 duos in the bronze bracket and the remaining pairs in the copper bracket.
Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian School/Tulane), the Waves’ No. 5 duo and competing as the bronze bracket’s ninth seed, first flew past Sarah Vaccaro and Madison Dutra of Santa Clara in straight sets before facing top-seeded Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ of USC in the quarterfinals.
Although Ettinger and Russ were favorited to win as the Trojan’s No. 4 pair, Adelhelm and Asprey moved on to the next round with the 21-15, 21-18 triumph.
After another straight-set win in the semifinals, Adelhelm and Asprey met with teammates Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) in the all-Pepperdine final. Cook and Messing were the bracket’s No. 2 seed, but were edged in the finals 21-17, 21-18.
Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) reached their third-straight pairs championship final, knocking off top teams from Arizona and Hawaii before meeting with Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes of USC in the finals.
Burnham, who won the 2013 AVCA National Pairs Championship last year with grad student and Pepperdine graduate Stevi Robinson, and Hughes claimed the crown with a 21-15, 21-18 triumph.
Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) reached the semifinals of the silver bracket, while Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) advanced to the quarterfinals.
Pepperdine concludes the regular season next week Saturday, April 19, hosting a double header with Pacific and Saint Mary’s. First serve at Zuma Beach is scheduled for 10 a.m.
