April 21, 2013
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill were crowned the gold bracket champions at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge, putting the finishing touches on a remarkable regular season. Additionally, Emily Cook and Katie Messing won the bronze bracket, while Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever placed second in the silver division.
Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) won four straight-set matches today in the gold bracket, which pitted all the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs from the eight schools in attendance together. The senior standouts are now a staggering 27-0 this season heading into the AVCA National Championship in two weeks.
The Waves’ top pair knocked off duos from Hawaii, Santa Clara and UCLA before meeting with USC’s Kirby Burnham and former teammate Stevi Robinson in the title match. The Trojans fought Frederick and Hill close, but in the end the Pepperdine duo prevailed 21-19, 21-18.
Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) also represented the Waves in the gold bracket, and reached the semifinals before losing to Burnham and Robinson.
Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodland HS) steamrolled their way to the bronze bracket title match, allowing just 11.25 points per set in the opening matches.
In the finals, the Waves traded sets with Samantha Hirschmann and Natasha Siljkovic of USC before emerging with a 15-12 win in the third to take the crown.
Pepperdine nearly made a clean sweep of all three brackets, but settled for a second-place effort by Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) in the silver bracket.
After small stumble in the first set of the day, Larsen and Woolever rebounded against Brooke Fournier and Kati Duddridge 21-14, 15-4 to advance to the second round where they met with teammates Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian).
Team Kell(i)ey advanced, and next scrapped by Karsta Lowe Bojana Todorovic of UCLA, 21-18, 29-27 in the semifinals.
The finals pitted the Waves against Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson of Long Beach State. Johnson and Jackson have not lost yet in 2013 and remained unbeaten after winning in three sets to take the silver bracket for the second season in a row.
Pepperdine will finish the season at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 3-5. The Waves won both the team and pairs title in 2012 and have been ranked #1 the entire 2013 season.
