April 28, 2012
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team advanced to the finals of the inaugural AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship after beating Long Beach State 3-2 in the semifinals.
The Waves will not know their opponent until later this afternoon, when play in the elimination bracket concludes. The College of Charleston plays Florida State in the first round, and the winner faces the 49ers in the semifinals. The team to emerge victorious from that match faces Pepperdine in the championship match.
Although a double-elimination format is being used for the majority of the competition, the championship match will be a winner-take-all contest.
Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) came firing out of the gates and downed Haleigh Hampton and Chelsea Cabrajac 21-7, 21-12. Hill tallied 15 digs and 15 kills, while Frederick added 12 digs, 11 kills and a pair of aces in the victory.
The Waves took a 2-0 lead after Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad Seaside Academy) and Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) defeated Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke 21-14, 21-12 on the stadium court.
Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) clinched the team win for Pepperdine (15-0) on court three. Robinson delivered 14 kills and Larsen tallied a career-high nine blocks in the 21-19, 21-10 victory.
With the team-win clinched, and another match left to play today, the Waves forfeited the remaining matches.
Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ari./Ironwood Ridge HS) were leading 21-19, 19-18 versus Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson when play was suspended.
On court four, action between Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Jocelyn Neely and Lauren Minkel was halted in the middle of set three.
The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. (PT)/5 p.m. (CT)
